WHAT IS SEMAX?

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro) analogue of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) fragment 4-10, investigated in the scientific literature for its effects on neurotrophic signaling, melanocortin pathways, and central nervous system activity. It has been studied in preclinical rodent models and in human clinical research, particularly in contexts involving cerebrovascular and cognitive impairment.

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESEARCH
  • BDNF-pathway signaling
  • Neurotrophic-factor biology
  • Melanocortin-system signaling
  • Neurocognitive research
  • Cerebrovascular research
  • Monoaminergic-system modulation

  • Published studies have investigated dose- and time-dependent increases in BDNF protein and trkB receptor expression in the hippocampus, basal forebrain, and other brain regions of rodent models.
  • Research suggests effects on neurocognitive parameters, including attention, memory-related tasks, and learning markers in preclinical and early human studies.
  • Current evidence indicates modulation of melanocortin and monoaminergic pathways, as well as changes in dopaminergic, serotonergic, and noradrenergic system markers in reported datasets.
  • Investigators have observed neuroprotective and cerebrovascular-related outcomes in clinical studies of ischemic stroke and cerebrovascular insufficiency.

Semax is being studied for its ability to influence melanocortin receptors and to increase expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor trkB in central nervous system tissue. Current evidence indicates that these effects may support neurotrophic signaling, synaptic plasticity, and neuronal survival pathways. Published work also suggests interactions with dopaminergic, serotonergic, and noradrenergic systems, along with changes in gene-expression patterns related to stress response and neuroprotection.
